Story Submission 5
Sylvia hugged her dark shall closer, faded and drab. It stood out against the bright happy walls of the room, against the beautiful white rocking chair, unused. She looked over to the empty, brand new crib, then lowered her wrapped arms to over her stomach. How desperately she wanted to fill these walls with the sounds of a child.
"Sylvia, my love?" The exhausted call of Andrew, Sylvia's one and only, woke her from her reverie, causing her to look over her shoulder to give him a tired smile. "Come now, we cannot keep the doctor waiting all day." His hand outstretched and made a small "come on" motion.
She let out a heavy breath, dabbing the scarf against her eyes as she touched knuckles with Andrew. A non-verbal "I love you" for the pair of them, who were both so bad at saying it. "Do you think he will have a solution?" She asked him with a small hopeful glace.
Andrew felt his heart squeeze. He had heard of families who struggled as he and his beautiful wife did, to have their own child, many times. The doctor advised him to not get Sylvia's hopes up. He had never successfully treated infertility. He could promise nothing. But how could he not? Sylvia was his everything. He squeezes her hand and pulls it up to kiss her knuckles.
"We could only hope and pray," he said softly. Sylvia nods slowly and looks down, feeling so tired and exhausted from it all. The couple left their home and made their way towards the doctor's office. Andrew looked over at Sylvia noticing how drained she was and shifts closer against her. Sylvia leans her head on his shoulder before pulling back once they were in front of the doctor's office.
Sylvia freezes as she notices a familiar face walk out of the office and stare at her. She tightens the shall around her body, noticing the pity in her eyes. Andrew leads her into the office, putting himself between her and the person. They made it into the small waiting room, noticing the doctor was out there already waiting.
Andrew's stomach knotted as he saw the doctor's face and takes Sylvia's hand as she sat down. Both look at the doctor, hoping for a miracle and that everything would turn out well.
"Doctor, please...Am I able to have kids?" Sylvia asks before the doctor was able to open his mouth. She was tired of stepping around the question.
"I'm sorry. It turns out that both of you are infertile..." he stated, looking at the two. Sylvia squeezes her eyes shut and reaches over to lean into Andrew's open arms, sobbing. Her love slowly rocks her back and forth, feeling his heart clench painfully at those words.
"I'll give you time to process the information," the doctor said before walking out of the room.
Andrew runs his hand through Sylvia's hair as he squeezed his eyes shut to stop his tears. "I'm sorry...I'm so sorry my love," she whimpered against his chest.
The couple felt pain burn through them as they suffered in silence at the information. Never a child of their own. Not even from one of them. Why them? Why were they cursed like this? They left the doctor's office soon after, both feeling their hearts completely crushed.
__Scene Two__
Andrew and Sylvia were leaving the fields after the hard day of work. Sylvia brushes her knuckles against his as she saw children run along the street, heart tightening as her other hand rests on her belly. Lost in thought, she didn't realize that Andrew led her over to the bakery till the sweet smell of honey buns and cookies came over her.
"We deserve a cookie for today's work," he said as he pulls her closer before waving at Mrs. Baker.
"Hello, folk! How are you today?" she asks with a friendly smile, turning around with a tray of warm cookies in her hands. "Would you like to sample?"
"Doing great and yes please," Andrew responded excitedly and grabs a cookie for himself and Sylvia. Mrs. Baker came over to give Sylvia a one-arm hug before taking a step back. "How are you feeling deary?"
"A bit better...It's still hard to process that I will never have kids of my own, but I'm getting better," she answered honestly, nibbling on the cookie.
Mrs. Baker nods before noticing silence as Sariah walks up to them. Andrew and Sylvia notice her odd behavior and shift to turn to her. "Hello Mrs. Baker, may I steal these two from you for a bit? I have some important things to talk about with them."
"Of course! I best be getting back to my bread," she said as she gives them all hugs and bids them a good afternoon before entering her shop.
"What do you need to tell us?" Andrew asks Sariah who kept glancing towards the doctor office and Sylvia. "Let's go somewhere we can sit down. "
They nod and make their way to their home noticing Sariah's eagerness and nervousness. They all take a seat and the couple turns to look at the young women, waiting for her to talk.
"A young boy and his father were found outside the fields yesterday evening. Sadly the father seems to be bitten and the poison from the snake was too much...He passed this morning leaving his son without a guardian. I know you two been wanting a kid and I believe this is your chance to raise your own. He's only seven but he seems like a smart young boy."
Andrew and Sylvia were both frozen as they processed what they heard. A son? A boy to raise as their own?
Andrew felt slightly terrified at the notion since he never thought he'd be able to be a father while Sylvia's was feeling something for the first time in forever. She was feeling hopeful.
"What's his name?" she asks Sariah.
"His name is Peter...He's a bit scared and lost without his father but I truly believe that you three will be a perfect fit...Come see me in the morning if you do accept." She said before getting up and leaving the house so the couple could process it.
They both stare at each other, trying to figure out what to say or think. Sylvia notices the look in his eyes and takes Andrew's hand. "I know its scary but he needs a family...We may not be able to build our own but we can give this young boy the one he deserves."
Andrew stayed silent before squeezing her hand," Then we should begin fixing up the nursery room for a boy his age..."
Sylvia began to cry and leans into Andrew's arms. "A son...we're going to have a son of our own..."
Andrew slowly rocks his wife as he stares out the window. "Our own child...Our own family..." The couple let the information sink completely before getting to work on fixing the room for young Peter. That afternoon they quickly traded for a bed, drawer, and nightstand while getting some clothes for him as well. By midnight, the room was completely ready for Peter leaving the couple to wait nervously for their new son.
